Young Artists in 2009
Sister
Cities Association of Volusia County, Inc. recently honored its 2009
Young Artist winners with a special dinner evening in Port Orange. That
evening included the Ballet Folklorico from Campeche, Mexico, at the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282. The theme of the contest this year,
for teens 13 through 18 was “Your Path to Peace.” The large, exceptional
drawing by José Areñas from Pierson-Taylor High was sent to Washington
D.C. for judging in the International Showcase.
A tribute
photograph by Spencer South, “Reflections of our Community” remains at
the post for the members and guests to enjoy. As usual, Spruce Creek
High had many winners, but for the first time there was a winner from
Pace Center for Girls.

Artist Competition 2005
Art Theme: Connecting Global Villages
Since 1988, The Young Artists
Competition has engaged youth from around the world with the sister
city mission. They are encouraged to use their imaginations while
exploring their thoughts and feelings about the theme. Entries are
judged on the basis of theme interpretation, composition and
originality. Art teachers, seeing the value of this exercise, have
been very supportive of this project, and because of their participation,
Volusia County, in only a few short years, has seen national winners, and
the international traveling exhibit. This year, once again, a winner
will hang at Daytona Beach City Hall in the office of City Clerk Jennifer
Thomas. It will be nicely framed and later returned to the artist
for his family to enjoy.
The
overall winner going to Washington, D.C. for the competition is Austin
Spitz, student of Cindy Jesup. Second place goes to Megan Brambier,
and third place to Jessica Marusa.
The judge for this year's competition was
Jane Conner-Ziser, a newcomer to our area and owner of the superb
new gallery in the Aliki Plaza, Galleria del Arte. With a background
in fine arts, 27 years of experience as a portrait photographer and master
retouching artist, and 17 years in digital imaging, Jane is uniquely
qualified to judge this contest which has been largely entered by 13-18
year old digital artists. Jane and her business partner,
photographer Patrick Ciatto, have graciously offered to host the entrants,
their teachers, families and friends at a reception Friday evening May
27th from 5-7pm to kick off the exhibit of the top ten winner which
remained up until June 4th.
All Sister Cities members were invited to
the party at the gallery at 398 S. Atlantic Avenue in Ormond Beach.
Awards were given at 6:00pm and Ms. Conner-Ziser generously gave a
demonstration for people interested after 7:00pm. She is one of the
most skilled computer artists in the state, and Sister Cities of Volusia
County is very thankful for her participation.
